I am a Professor Emeritus of Information Systems at Idaho State University, with an extensive professional and academic background that spans both Computer Science and Information Systems. I am known as a visionary leader who has successfully shepherded the creation of an interdisciplinary STEM program intersecting multiple colleges across a university. I have both a Bachelor's and Master's in Computer Science, and a Ph.D. in Information Systems. I have taught courses in Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, and Geographical Information Systems. As Professor Emeritus of Information Systems and the Founding Chair of Informatics and Computer Science at Idaho State University, I have earned a reputation as a visionary leader by successfully guiding the creation of this interdisciplinary STEM program, which spans multiple colleges within the university.
I have extensive STEM knowledge in Informatics, Information Systems, and Computer Science. This expertise originates from my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, my Master's degree in Computer Science, and my Ph.D. in Information Systems. My experience includes positions as a software developer at a Fortune 500 company, a highly rated professor of Business and Health Informatics, Computer Science, and Computer Information Systems, and an innovative leader and effective chair of an Informatics and Computer Science department.
Upon receiving my Bachelor’s in Computer Science, my first position was as a software developer for Conoco, Inc. This professional role provided me with keen insights into preparing Computer Science graduates for positions in businesses that are not solely IT-focused. Additionally, my thorough understanding of the challenges of STEM education in an increasingly competitive and technologically diverse environment is complemented by my awareness of how to best engage new generations of students in the classroom.
As a faculty member, I work diligently to ensure a positive learning experience for all students. I am an expert in curriculum development and course delivery. I was recognized as the 2011 Faculty Member of the Year by the Associated Students of Idaho State University, honored as an Outstanding Master Teacher by Idaho State University in both 2011 and 2012, and received the ISU College of Business 2002-2003 Outstanding Teacher Award. Much of my research focuses on improving the pedagogical experience for STEM students.
My research spans computer science and information systems. I have over 80 peer-reviewed publications, including 35 journal publications, and received the ISU College of Business 2005-2006 Outstanding Research Award. I am an Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Senior Member, and in 2007, I was awarded a Curtin University Research Fellowship in Perth, Australia.
My ongoing research has been conducted with the goal of sharing my effective and acclaimed teaching practices with other faculty. The papers ”Cyber Notes Educational Content Delivery Tool: Addressing the Needs of Gen Z and Gen Alpha Students” and “Modular Design of Teaching Cases: Reducing Workload While Maximizing Reusability” were both published post-retirement.
Research Interests
I recently wrappd up a three paper arc associated with IT-Enhanced Teaching Approaches as well as Teaching Tools.
